How to use the Men’s Golf Club Selection Calculator

We have kept this calculator as simple as possible for you to use on the courses, and it should – if we did it correctly, appear on a mobile phone page snuggly so you don’t have to download apps or similar. it only has one input and that is the distance to the hole from your current location. however, we have brief instructions below just in case you need a hand.

  • Prior to your shot check the distance to the hole, on all put par three you will be using a driver for your tee shot, so the first shot it easy – it’s written or color coded on the length marker on the tee box. We have more information on that on the link.
  • If its your second shot , and you are not on the green then you need to estimate the distance to the flag. Roughly is fine, and it will take practice (or advice from whoever you are playing with) we have some tips on how to do this below the calculator. You then enter the distance, estimated or accurate, into the calculator
  • then all you do is press calculate and it suggests the club you should use based on the average distance golfers hit this club.
  • Note: It is only a suggestion, you may hit longer, or shorter and only you know this, but the suggestion will give you a ballpark figure within a club on what you should use.

The Calculator can be found right below this box.

Mens and Womens Golf Club Selection Calculators - The reasons

The Calculator is above as that's why you are here, we presume, but just to be clear we know that there is a little controversy about highlighting differences between men and women on a golf course and that there are plenty of women who can hit a golf ball further than men, so in the calculator we took averages, it is designed as a tool for those who wish to use it, and hopefully help you on the course.

You can take the data it provides and use it any way you wish, be you male or female, but for ease ( and because we had to put the two on different pages as they clash with each other - its a code thing!) we have split them like this.

We did consider doing it by Handicap but that would have made for loads of different pages with the same calculator on it and that would be overkill we think. So here is the men's golf club selection calculator, not restricted to men of course! The womens can be found on the link below and here.

We also have a golf walking distance calculator that can estimate the miles, Km, the steps and even the calories you burn while you are playing 18 holes. on the link here and below.

Why use a Golf Club Selection Calculator?

Although more suited to players learning the game, it can have uses across the skill level spectrum. It gives an idea of the club to use for the distance to the hole, and although it can not account for lie, weather or hazards, it allows you to plan your route by suggesting a club for the distance you are trying to make.

So if you are wanting to come up short of the bunkers or sand traps guarding the green, you can assess the distance and chose a club that will achieve that, rather than aiming straight for the green, similarly you can see which club will bring you long of you know the green putts easier from the back.

It all boils down to what your aims are, but with the suggestion you can scale up or down knowing on average, the distance you may achieve with any particular golf club.

As you learn and progress you will find your need for the calculator less, which is as it should be, but at the beginning or on new courses it could be an invaluable tool is selecting your next club for that tricky shot.

Understanding Your Golf Club Distance

In order to select the right club for your shot, it's important to understand how far you can usually hit each club. This can vary greatly from golfer to golfer and will be affected by factors such as strength, technique, and club length.

A good starting point is to track your distances using a rangefinder - more expensive - or by marking the distances of your shots during a round of golf - much cheaper!. With this information, you can begin to determine your average distances for each club and adjust your choices as you need to.

It's also a good idea to keep track of any changes in your swing or physical condition that may affect your distances. By understanding your personal distance with each club, you can make more confident and accurate club selections.

How to Work out Distance on a Golf Course

While this warrants its own article, and will get one linked right here when we have written it, we have some tips below to get you started, as the you may choose the right club using our Golf Club selection calculator but if you chose, guess or estimate the wrong distance then it may amount to nothing!

The following items can all help you estimate, some very accurately, the distance you have on the hole.

  1. Rangefinder: A rangefinder is a handheld device that uses laser technology to measure the distance from the golfer to a target. To use a rangefinder, simply point it at the target and press the button, and it will display the distance in yards. Even some lover priced rangefinders have additional features, such as slope measurement and target acquisition modes.
  2. GPS Device: A GPS device specifically designed for golf can measure distances to the front, middle, and back of the green, as well as to hazards and other targets on the course. The device can be mounted on a cart, carried in a pocket, or worn as a wristwatch. To use a GPS device, select the target you want to measure and the device will display the distance.
  3. Smartphone App: There are several golf GPS apps available for smartphones that can measure distances to various targets on the course. To use a golf GPS app, simply open the app, select the target, and it will display the distance. Some apps may also offer additional features such as aerial views of the course, scorekeeping, and shot tracking.

Note: It's important to check the rules of the course before using any distance-measuring device to ensure it is allowed under the local rules of golf. You can also estimate the distance by pacing off the yards or by using markers on the course which do not require extra cash or batteries!

Be aware that distance is not the only factor in play when you are judging what club you need. Wind, height ( the balls, not yours) as well as the lie all will have an impact on how far the ball will travel once it leaves the club face. So if it's blowing force 9, then you might need to rethink that 7 iron shot! ( and rethink why you are on the course at all)

The Main Differences Between Men's and Women's Golf clubs

are as follows:

  1. Length: Women's golf clubs are generally shorter than men's clubs. This helps to maintain the proper swing plane and increase their accuracy.
  2. Weight: Women's golf clubs are lighter than men's clubs to make them more manageable to handle and swing. You can read more about this on the site.
  3. Flex: The shafts of women's golf clubs are designed with a softer flex, which means they bend more easily during the swing. This helps generate more speed and distance for slower swing speeds.

It's important to note that the best golf club for an individual, regardless of gender, depends on various factors such as height, swing speed, and playing style. It's recommended to get fitted by a professional club fitter to ensure you're using the best clubs for your game.

  • All golfers should also consider their skill level when selecting clubs. Beginner golfers often have slower swing speeds and require clubs that have a larger sweet spot and more forgiveness.
  • More advanced golfers have faster swing speeds and prefer clubs that have a smaller sweet spot and provide more control.

The calculator above uses the average across many data sets to suggest, so if you are above or below you can consider scaling up or down your club choice if needed.

Conclusion

The golf club selection calculator for men can be a useful tool to help you decide what club is best depending on the distance of your next shot. It can't account for hazards, or weather, or your balls lie, but it will suggest a club based on the distance you need to achieve.

Take it as just that, a suggestion, and hopefully you will start to develop your distance and selection skills quicker and more effectively out on the course.

As we mentioned club selection is one of the most important, and hard to develop skills any golfer, new or old, has to learn. So hopefully any tips or advice we can provide will be of help and prove useful in getting those scores down!
