Do Pitch And Putt Courses Have A Dress Code?
We know that regular golf courses can have strict rules and regulations about behaviour on and off the course, including what is considered suitable attire again both on and off. However, with Pitch and Putts being more inclusive and less formal do these rules extend to these smaller courses and clubs as well? We take a look if there are dress code for pitch and putts below.
Pitch and Putt courses do not tend to have dress codes. It is suggested that players wear comfortable clothing like training shoes, shirts, and pants (weather dependent). However, on specific days like tournaments or charity events this may change and it’s always best to check with the course before you play.
We take a look at what you can wear on a pitch and putt golf course, and a little about what you might need on a full size course, but what won’t necessarily help you on a short pitch and putt course.
Is There a Dress Code For Pitch and Putt Courses?
It is very unlikely a stand alone pitch and putt courses it going to have a dress code, or if it does it would be more likely to be casual that formal. the idea of these courses is to make golf accessible to all, and at a lower cost.
Having to go out to spend money on golf shoes, pants and shirts is an unnecessary expensive for people who may just be starting out in the game, or only play a few times a year. In fact the best quote we have seen about pitch and putt dress code was below.
That said it is still wise to ‘read the room’ and of you are playing is more conservative areas many leave the mankini or the two peice at home before you hit the holes!
If the course is attached to a more prestigious full course dress codes would certainly be worth checking though, as the rules of the main course could be adopted by the smaller pitch and putt course.
Do I Need Golf Shoes For Pitch and Putt?
Golf shoes are incredibly unlikely to be required for playing on a Pitch and Putt course, although they can be helpful. How helpful depends on how hard you are hitting that ball ( which should not really need to be full whack on a short hole course.
However, golf shoes do have spikes on the bottom that provide traction on the course and can help with balance and if you are already on the road to playing more and more golf and own a pair then it certainly won’t hurt to wear them if you have them.
It is best to check with the specific course or club if you are in anyway unsure but 95% ( plucked out of the air admittedly) will not expect you to have golf shoes, and comfortable athletic shoes or sneakers would be fine as well.
Do I Need a Golf Glove for Pitch and Putt?
Need is a strong word here, a pitch and putt is only 9 holes, and only par 3 short holes at that ( more here on pitch and putt course length) . it is unlikely you will be needing to hit the clubs at full power, and there for the grip and pressure on your hand will be less.
however if you have sensitive hands then a glove, just like the golf shoes, can’t hurt and if you have one then no problem with wearing it. It can help with grip and sweaty hands on those hot days. We have an article on why golfers wear one glove here on the site in case you wondered why we just said glove rather than gloves !
Can You Wear Sneakers On a Pitch and Putt?
Sneakers can be worn on a Pitch and Putt course, but it’s best to check with the specific course or club you plan to play at to make sure if there are any specific requirements for footwear.
Some more traditional courses may have a dress code that requires all players to wear golf shoes, even guests, while others may be more relaxed and allow players to wear sneakers or other footwear. Also be aware that often competitions or tournaments may have additional requirements.
Sneakers are not specifically designed for golf of course, so they do not provide the same support or traction as golf shoes. However, they will still work, and you can play in them and if you are a casual golfer then shoes really are not worth the investment at this stage.
Once you have decided if golf is a sport for you, then, it may be worth investing in a pair of golf shoes, as they do provide better grip and traction, comfort, and support on the course especially if you are moving up to 18 full size holes.
Conclusion
So while it is rare for pitch and putt or par 3 courses to implement a dress code, at least a formal one, it is worth checking, especially of the short course it attached to a more formal club that might share it requirements across both the full course and the pitch and putt.
Also while pitch and Putt may not have requirements on regular days, there might be a dress code on tournament days and if you are playing in one make sure to check before you play.
Otherwise use your common sense both it term of people’s sensibilities and your own comfort.
